Camp Nuhop—located in southern Ashland County, Ohio—is a residential summer camp for all children with learning disabilities, attention deficit disorders and behavior disorders. What started out as a one-week program years ago with eight counselors serving 27 children has blossomed into a camp that serves 560 children during six weeks, with a waiting list of 50. The camp has grown to 45 staff members and five directors.
The Nuhop Center for Experiential Learning’s Outdoor Education Programs integrates state and district standards into our curriculum. After conducting an in-depth needs assessment with our clients we design a curriculum based on the academic needs of each school district we serve. Our unique program provides an exceptional balance between experiential, outdoor and environmental education philosophies. We focus on academic and interpersonal skills in an outdoor classroom where students learn from experiencing our natural world. We believe that children should experience a safe, healthy outdoor educational setting in which to develop a sense of community, independence and appreciation for and understanding of the environment. Our Outdoor Education Programs range from day experiences to week long residential and day programs.
