The Importance of Being Earnest

The Ashland University Department of Theatre will present the classic Oscar Wilde comedy “The Importance of Being Earnest,” to be performed Thursday, Oct. 31, through Sunday, Nov. 3, at the Studio Theatre in the Center for the Arts. The Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows begin at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday’s matinee is at 2 p.m.

This production of “The Importance of Being Earnest” is being directed by Teresa Durbin-Ames, associate professor of theatre. First performed in 1895, it shines a humorous light on the absurdities of Victorian society, especially those related to the pursuit of love and marriage.

The story follows two young men, played by Gabriel Noble and Keever Whitehead, wooing two young women, played by Leanna Uselton and Payton Gall. The men both pretend to be someone they’re not, each having assumed the name Ernest, while the women think they’re in love with the same man. A formidable mother, a strict governess and a nervous rector, to be performed by Becca Huegler, Kathryn Shoaff and Theo Davis, respectively, also are key characters.

“Prepare to be thoroughly entertained as you unravel the layers of deception, wit and undeniable charm to ultimately discover the vital importance of being earnest,” said Durbin-Ames.

Other members of the talented cast include James Barrows, Eiley McCardle, Meredith Morgan, Abigail Mozina and Sheldon Stotts, while additional students involved are stage managers Emilee Fletcher and Ellie Nickoli, props masters Lily Dowler and Abigail Mozina, assistant sound designer Jesse Baker and Hermalinda (Mela) Abarca on the costume crew. Brynn Blickensderfer and Robert Cochran are light and sound board operators.

Guest artists working on the production consist of Justin A. Miller, scenic designer; D. Justin Bilewicz ’09, costume designer; Seth Morrison ’18, lighting and sound designer; and Tyler Rice ’23, technical director.

Tickets can be purchased from the AU Campus Store in person or online at ashland.edu/performing-arts-tickets. They will not be available for purchase at the door. Tickets are $2 for AU students, $5 for non-AU students and $10 for adults, faculty/staff and senior citizens.
